WHO WE ARE

The Movimento Turismo del Vino (Wine Tourism Movement or MTV for short) is a non-profit making association founded in 1993. It is a unique organisation in the world which is today able to encompass more than a thousand of Italy’s best and most prestigious wine producers, each selected on the basis of  very specific requirements, the most important being the quality of their hospitality.
Through its ongoing commitment MTV aims to expand the national wine tourism industry; a fundamental economic resource for the development of the area and an effective means of protecting the environment, whilst at the same time promoting a lifestyle that puts the guest at the center of attention.
Realising the importance of this resource, many producers are investing in wine tourism anddeveloping hospitality alongside their wine productions. Tasting rooms, restaurants andagriturismos are now widespread amongst Associate Companies adding value to the wine and developing closer ties with the territory which, with all its treasures, has become the main attraction of food and wine itineraries.
Over the  years the Movement  has developed the knowledge necessary to recognise and utilise the land and its riches, an extraordinarily valuable tool for maintaining Italy’s success when competing with other excelling wine producing  areas such as Loire Valley, Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Australia.
In order to draw ever more people into the wine world, MTV has created an events calendar of initiatives, meetings and special occasions. These events provide opportunities to visit the wineries and it is these wineries which are at the heart of the process in optimising the territory’s rural heritage.  Today, thanks to the work of MTV members, wine has a social value; if shared, it becomes an instrument capable of guaranteeing great economic development.

OBJECTIVES

- Promote the culture of wine and visits to wineries and their estates with the object of increasing the prestige and awareness of the Companies and their surrounding areas, thereby creating new opportunities for economic development.

- Increase food and wine tourism in the wine producing areas, with the intention of promoting all the activities connected with the area and not just those within the wine sector.

- Organise events which are capable of creating new relationships between wine tourists and wineries for the creation of new commercial channels. Visits to wineries can be an opportunity for direct sales not only on the day, but throughout the whole year.

PATRONS & PARTNERS

The patronage of the Ministero per le Politiche Agricole (Ministry of Agricultural Politics ),Alimentari (Food) and Forestali (Forestry) and our appointment to the Commissione per la Promozione e la Valorizzazione del Turismo enogastronomico (Commission  for the Promotion and Devolopment of Food and Wine Tourism) set up by  the Ministero del Turismo (Ministry of Tourism) officially recognise the Movement’s commitment and work in the development of wine tourism and the promotion of its wine producing regions.
The partnership with Enoteca Italiana, the institutional head office of the Association has as its objective to increase  the culture of fine wine and promote projects and initiatives directed primarily at the younger generation educating them about responsible drinking.

OPPORTUNITIES & SERVICES OFFERED BY THE MOVIMENTO TURISMO DEL VINO - METHODS OF COMMUNICATION

www.movimentoturismovino.it  The official web site is a fundamental method of communication, practical and effective for both communicating with wine tourists and receiving information from the Association:
•offering all wine lovers the opportunity to get to know MTV and to be kept up to date with all the events and initiatives it promotes throughout the year in real time;
•allows all members to directly access their dedicated areas and update them, giving them the opportunity to publish the Company’s news on the home page;
•permits the members to receive various Newsletters (one a month) which suggest activities and initiatives dedicated to MTV.
MTV Wine Applications
On the occasion of Cantine Aperte (Open Wine Cellars) 2010 the National MTV, in partnership with XTRI Srl, presented MTVINO, the exclusive application which, with the simple click of a button, enables you to view over 1000 member Companies in Italy.
Through the App MTVINO all iPhone users are able to:
-easily view a complete updated list of Companies, divided by Region;
-view dossiers with details such as, profile, history, specific geographical location (map of the wineries), grape varieties cultivated, the oenologist (wine expert), plantation zones, commercial wine labels, hospitality opening hours, languages spoken,  vineyard visiting opportunities, tastings, purchasing opportunities, catering, accessibility and much more.
Moreover, with a single touch,  the MTVINO App enables users to link, thanks to the IPhone’s GPS connection, to a map of the closest wineries and distilleries. The link shows the shortest route, to get the user quickly and easily to the desired associate MTV Company.
World 2.0 In addition, MTV also offers internet users the opportunity to subscribe to the Movement’s fan page so that they can keep up to date with everything going on in the wine world, exchange information, find out about all the events supported by MTV and get to know each other.
Furthermore, since the internet is one of the most frequently used methods for wine surfers  to organise their holidays privately, the Movimento Turismo del Vino’s Facebook page aims to become a source of information and inspiration for the entire population of wine lovers.

EVENTI E ATTIVITA’ A “MARCHIO MTV”

Communications with the Press
MTV has its own national press office that continuously  and enthusiastically communicates and promotes the activities of the movement to all the leading and minor sectors of the media.
MTV’s national press office also carries out supporting activities for some of the Regional Associations’ press offices and intervenes where the regional MTV does not have its own press office. Further more they contribute to the purchasing of “advertising board” space for major events.

Communication with the Companies
The National Movement offers a few different types of affiliations for partners providing specialist services that are useful to all MTV members.

TRADE FAIRS AND EVENTS

MTV participates annually in some of the most important tourism and wine trade fairs where it promotes the Associates’ activities. In particular BIT – The International Tourism Exchange in Milan and at Vinitaly in Verona.
The National Movement also represents the association at conferences, seminars and national and international workshops. This keeps the Movement active throughout the year, with the aim of spreading the association’s philosophy, whilst also acting as a point of reference for domestic wine tourism.

“MTV TRADE MARK” EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

The Movement’s most famous event is definitely Cantine Aperte (Wineries’ Open Day), the largest celebration of Italian wine culture, created with the goal of developing the knowledge of wine, wine-producing districts, producers and has coined the motto Vedi Cosa Bevi (See What You Drink). Founded in 1993, Cantine Aperte is held every year on the last Sunday in May all over Italy when a million wine tourists are given the opportunity to visit MTV member wineries. This is the most important wine tourism event in the country, both in terms of public attendance and visibility.

Calici di Stelle is the traditional summer event held  on the evening of the Feast of San Lorenzo on August 10th. The historic city centres which are members of the città del vino association come alive with dance, poetry and music dedicated to the theme of Bacchus; enriching a program dedicated to the thousands of tourists, both Italians and foreigners ,who make toasts with the finest wine, paired with typical delicacies from each region. Increasingly comuni (town councils) are adding Calici di Stelle (Goblets of Stars) as a summer tourist event appealing to the tourist on holiday.

2008 saw the introduction of a new event ‘San Martino in Cantina’ (the Feast of Saint Martin in the Winery) which takes place annually on the second weekend of November. On this special occasion, the wineries open and propose tastings of their new vintage paired with seasonal delicacies. The warmth of hospitality and joyful conviviality warms us up in this period which, after the first few days of cold , grants a brief respite from the weather, fully meriting the name Estate di San Martino (Indian Summer). Therefore visiting wineries becomes a delightful way to liven up a dull November day.

The grape harvest is the climax of the year for every vine grower and the Movimento Turismo del Vino allocates Benvenuta Vendemmia (Welcome Harvest) to the third Sunday of September, however, the actual celebration date varies from region to region as it is dependent upon the most favourable time to harvest.
The final event of the year, Natal in Cantina, (Christmas in the Winery) takes place on one Sunday in December. On this day, the wine tourist can enjoy Christmas Shopping in a relaxing atmosphere where they can choose from the many gift boxes and present options offered by the various Companies.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR WINE TOURISTS TO VISIT MEMBER COMPANIES

A Tavola con il Vignaiolo
An initiative that leads the wine tourists directly to the producer’s ‘home’. A Tavola con il Vignaiolo (Dinner with the winemaker) is the symbol that indicates the places where good local cuisine, accompanied by wines from the wineries, turns into a friendly and informal meeting.
Accommodation
Accommodation is available at agriturismos, bed & breakfasts, historic residences and hotels, where tourists can stay and make use of the amenities worthy of the most luxurious of hotels (wine therapy, restaurants, swimming pools).
Club Turisti del Vino
The ‘Wine Tourist Club’ was created to enable winemakers dedicated to supplying fine wine and quality hospitality to meet the tourists that are interested in receiving information, proposals and suggestions about the wine world. Wine tourists who join the Club will be kept informed regularly about all the activities, tasting courses and other events on offer throughout the year.

Girocantine

Some of MTV’s Regional Associations organise coach tours departing  from Italy’s main cities and taking tourists straight to the wine-producing areas, giving the visitor the option to choose from a selection of various itineraries.
Sabato on Wine
Throughout the year, on the first Saturday of each month, each region opens their doors independently of any “event” and comes to life through their own food and wine initiatives, providing yet another occasion to explore in depth the reality of real life wine production.
Promotion of the product/package : Travelling to Italy’s wine areas is now easier

Since 2010, in response to increasing requests from around the world for an organised and sustainable way to explore the wine areas of ‘Bel Paese’ (Beautiful Country),  the Movimento Turismo del Vino has been establishing partnerships with the Tour Operators that are able to cater for a complete range of tourists. Wine and food are included within a wide range of travel experiences in order to attract the largest possible number of tourists interested in the “Italian System”.

HOSPITALITY CERTIFICATION IN THE WINERY

This unique certification, which can only be used by MTV member Companies, derives from the Technical Rule Book the “Decalogo dell’Accoglienza” (The Ten Commandments of Hospitality) and is issued by the Movimento Turismo del Vino and certified by the 3A PTA Board.
This technical rule book sets out the standards that must be met by all member Companies of the “Movimento Turismo del Vino” with the aim of making the quality of the service they offer readily apparent to the customer/visitor through the use of the “Accoglienza coi fiocchi”  (Top Class Hospitality) logo.

For the tourist, visits to a winery has become central to the process of reclaiming their rural heritage.
This certification aims to distinguish the member Companies’ tourist offers stimulating new tourism and commercial channels.
