The meaning of Decugnano’s name is unknown, lost over time. The first written testimony dates back to 1212, when wine was made at Decugnano for the clergy in Orvieto. These were the lands of Saint Mary of Decugnano.
Geological eras, time, and the hands of mankind have all contributed to a unique terroir.
The soil is an ocean floor from the Pliocene period. The vine roots are exploring into the sandy clay-soil, among fossils of sea shells and oysters, enriching our wines with minerals and marine flavors.
The altitude over 300 meters (1,000 feet), favors ideal ventilation and a diurnal temperature variation emphasises aromas. The optimal exposure guarantees the perfect maturity of the grapes.
For the tourist
We organize tailor made wine tours, by appointment only. Come and learn everything there is to know about wine from the vineyard to the glass.
All our tours are held by our qualified Wine Master. A magical journey through the history of Decugnano, the Barbi Family and Orvieto. The experience includes a visit to the modern area of the Estate, a walk through the vineyards into the ancient caves, where our sparkling wine traditional method is made and the French oak barrels are kept.
The wine tasting will take place in the old Medieval Chapel of Saint Mary of Decugnano where our Wine Master will guide you through three tastings, specially chosen for you, together with a selection of local delicacies.
Our shop will be open to purchase wine and olive oil at very convenient prices.
We also organize wine-food pairing courses and cooking classes.
