The Castello di Magione, was built between 1150-1170. The Castello di Magione winery was based here until 2009, but has now been transferred to new premises in the heart of their vineyards, behind the hills surrounding Lake Trasimeno. The castle still houses its historical cellar, with the barrique – barrels in which the red wine is matured, and the casks dedicated to the precious Vin Santo. Visitors will have the opportunity to visit the oldest part of the Castle, the Romanesque-style chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist, which houses two frescoes from the school of Pinturicchio (sixteenth century). In 1502, the castle was seat of a conspiracy organized by some Italian noblemen against Cesare Borgia . Today, as in the past, the Castle is the summer residence of the Grand Master of the Order of Malta. It offers visitors a tasting room with the possibility of purchasing: wine, olive oil, honey and nuts.
